Name: Domaine les Filles de Septembre

The people: Roland and Francoise Geraud

The Story:

One of the more charming names for a domaine, this one comes from the fact that Roland and his brother Hugues each have two daughters and all the birthdays are in September, hence ‘les filles de septembre’. The theme continues as you’ll find the names of the respective daughters, Delphine, Dane, Manon and Marine (all now grown up) preserved on the names of various different cuvées of their wines.

In Cotes de Thongue terms this is a medium sized domaine and, like most places, they do a bit of everything, though here that notably also includes some strong dessert wines: a late harvest white and a late harvest red (‘Vendange’s d’Automne – Price Band C). Unlike most places, they actually do have an English importer, Yapp Brothers, for two of their wines, their Tradition (basic) red, and their Tradition (basic) rosé.

These tradition wines are fine (Price Band A), but not especially exciting.  For more interest, go up a small notch in price. Among the whites, try their Clos Marine (Price Band B), a blend of sauvignon, viognier and chardonnay whose gorgeous nose isn’t quite matched by the mouth feel - just a bit pillowy – but is definitely interesting. Among the reds, two stand out; first their Delphine de St André, a super syrah-led blend with carignan, which is round and pleasurable (Price Band B); also worthwhile is their cabernet sauvignon – merlot blend, Danae (Price Band A), delivering the classic Bordeaux style but as if from a markedly sunny vintage, thanks to the Languedoc warmth.
